MONUMENTAL – Berlin NSDAP Buildings, 70 Years Later
In the summer of 1944 nearly half a million Jews - including my mother and her family - were deported from Hungary. Most were sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp complex. Berlin was the nexus of all these events.
In the summer of 2014, I photographed architecture in Berlin that dates to the period of 1933-1945.
Initially designed to intimidate with grand facades and imposing scale, these surviving buildings have acquired new significance as unintended monuments.
